LACERS APPOINTMENT-BASED SERVICE BEGINS JUNE 3RD

On Monday, June 3, LACERS will begin utilizing an appointment-based system to provide you with the convenience to coordinate getting all your retirement needs addressed on your schedule. There will be two options for appointments: in person, at our headquarters, and virtually, via Zoom. These new options will allow for timely and convenient access to get your questions answered. To make an appointment, visit lacers.org/contact-us or call (800) 779-8328.

If you are dropping off documents and don’t need to speak to anyone, you do not need to make an appointment. The LACERS Front Desk will be available to receive them during our normal operating hours. Please note, LACERS’ Business Hours will change as follows:

  • New Front Desk Hours
    8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (appointments only)

  • Phone Hours
    7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. – Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
    7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. – Tuesday

Please be advised that pre-entry metal detector screening requirements are now in place at LACERS’ headquarters. Members and visitors are requested to plan visits accordingly. A current government-issued photo identification or City employee badge is required to enter the LACERS headquarters except when attending public meetings of the LACERS Board of Administration. Also, parking is NOT available at the building. Paid parking lots, public transit, and street parking are available nearby.

HAVE YOU GOTTEN MARRIED OR DIVORCED AFTER RETIREMENT?

Experiencing life changes such as getting married, establishing a domestic partnership, or getting a divorce after retirement can lead to confusion as to how your benefits may be impacted. Below is a helpful checklist of actions to take if you should marry or file a domestic partnership, as well as a list of items to consider if you should legally dissolve a marriage or domestic partnership in retirement.

If you marry or file a domestic partnership after you retire, we recommend you take the following actions:

  • Submit your marriage license/domestic partnership certificate to LACERS.
  • Review your beneficiaries on file.
  • Although there is no continuance benefit option for a spouse married or a domestic partnership filed after retirement, contact LACERS to understand what benefits, if any, your spouse or domestic partner may qualify for.
  • Review your tax withholding and exemptions.

If you and your spouse/domestic partner decide to legally dissolve your marriage or domestic partnership, here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

  • Pension – Community Property laws may lead to the courts dividing your pension benefit.
  • Continuance Benefit – The Continuance benefit for an eligible surviving spouse or domestic partner will be terminated if there is a divorce in retirement.
  • Beneficiaries – You may wish to remove former spouses/domestic partners as beneficiaries of your retirement benefits and assign different individuals.
  • Health Plan Coverage – Retirees’ former spouses/domestic partners are not eligible for LACERS health plans and their coverage will be terminated. If LACERS is not notified, and a former spouse/domestic partner utilizes health benefits, the Member will be charged accordingly.
