Retirement Seminar

LACERS offers a variety of seminars to help you prepare for retirement. Through the Planning for Retirement Seminars and the Lunchtime Lecture Series, you can learn more about your LACERS retirement plan including your retirement benefits, retiree health benefits, survivor benefits and more. Our Personal Finance Series of financial education workshops will cover everything from basic money management to strategic investing to meet your financial goals. We believe that the more information you have about retirement, the more prepared you will be for retirement.

LACERS currently offers:

Planning for Retirement Seminars (PFR)
These seminars help you to understand your retirement benefits as a LACERS Member. The more you learn about this comprehensive benefit program, the better you will be prepared for retirement.

 

Retirement 101 - This seminar is recommended for City employees that have more than five years to go before retiring. The seminar covers the LACERS retirement formula, your retirement allowance and survivor benefits in a brief 1 ½ hour format. This seminar is scheduled monthly, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at LACERS.

Late Career - This seminar is recommended for City employees planning to retire within five years. The half-day seminar covers LACERS retirement formula, your retirement allowance benefit, your health benefits, survivor benefits, mental preparedness and what to expect at your retirement counseling session. Scheduled twice a month - one seminar on Friday, another on Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at LACERS.

LACERS will come to you

LACERS staff will present any of the Planning for Retirement Seminars at City worksites. City Departments can request these seminars if they have a minimum of 30 participants and a conference or lunch room to accommodate the presentation. Department Personnel Directors or Training Coordinators can schedule worksite Planning for Retirement Seminars by calling (213) 473-7200 or (800) 779-8328.

Lunchtime Lecture Series (LL)
These are a series of hour-long seminars (held during the lunch hour) that focus on particular topics related to LACERS benefits or retirement planning. They are held at LACERS from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Topics include: Increasing Your Service Credit , Health Benefits , Dissolution of Marriage/Domestic Partnership, Disability Retirement and Survivor Benefits and the Family Death Benefit Insurance Program.

Personal Finance Series (PFS)
Presented by a financial education firm specializing in unbiased educational programs. The firm does not sell any financial products, services, or investments. All instructors are Certified Financial Planners.

 

Financial Management Basics - The first part of this 4-hour workshop covers the basics including budgeting, credit, cash and debt management. The second part focuses on your retirement dreams and programs offered by the City to help you achieve your retirement goals.

  NEW Investing Basics: Increasing Retirement Income - This 3½-hour workshop covers strategies for investing, with discussions on time horizons, risk, risk tolerance and asset allocation.
  Advanced Investing - Workshop currently in development.

Please be aware that all LACERS seminars have attendance limitations. If you reserve a seat and later decide you will not be attending, please call (213) 473-7200 or (800) 779-8328 and cancel your reservation as soon as possible. This will allow other City employees the opportunity to attend.
